Copy editing and proofreading
Through my company, Birchbark Press, I provide copy-editing and proofreading for publishers, book packagers, and authors. My experience is broad. I've edited and proofed books on many topics, including these:
How I workEditing: I edit as lightly as possible but as extensively as necessary to make sure the manuscript follows the author's and publisher's preferences and requests for grammar, style, readability, punctuation, taste, and keymarking or templating. The manuscript is the author's; my edits are suggestions.Proofing: I mark text and design variations from the manuscript and publisher's style. In addition, I watch for problems in grammar, style, readability, punctuation, and taste. Style: I use the stylebook requested by the author or publisher, including these mainstays: The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Chicago Manual of Style, MLA Handbook for Writers, and The Associated Press. Electronic or paper: Although I do some work with paper manuscripts and red pencils, almost all my editing and proofreading is performed electronically in Word or Acrobat. Electronic files may be transmitted by e-mail or through your or my FTP server, as well as by CD and overnight delivery. How I billAfter we agree on a pay rate or total fee for the project, I perform the work. I'll send an invoice electronically with the completed project. If the project lasts longer than two weeks, I'll send you an invoice every two weeks with the work completed to date.Payment by check is expected within 30 days. If a project requires shipping, you'll pay the freight to and from Eagle River. Fairbanks | Recommended books | Contact |
